Gamma-radiation-induced negative nonlinear absorption in quartz glass

نویسندگان

چکیده

The effect of ionizing radiation on the nonlinear optical properties materials needs to be considered for applications that employ high-power laser pulses in extreme environments. Heraeus Infrasil302 quartz glass was irradiated by gamma rays, and its absorption measured using open-aperture Z-scan technique with nanosecond pulses. Irradiation results a negative coefficient whose magnitude increases irradiation dose. Nonlinear coefficients −0.78, −1.14, −1.29, −1.88~ × ~10 −13 m/W are doses 600 krad, 1.2 Mrad, 3.6 10 respectively. Thermal annealing restores quartz-glass their unirradiated values. It is suggested metallic impurities introduced manufacturing process have role inducing saturated glass, which manifests as coefficient, demonstrated comparing equivalent measurements Spectrosil2000 quartz.

Nature of radiation-induced defects in quartz.

Although quartz (α-form) is a mineral used in numerous applications wherein radiation exposure is an issue, the nature of the atomistic defects formed during radiation-induced damage has not been fully clarified. Especially, the extent of oxygen vacancy formation is still debated, which is an issue of primary importance as optical techniques based on charged oxygen vacancies have been utilized ...

Absorption of Beta and Gamma Radiation

About this lab The natural environment involves nuclear radiation. Mankind has added to this by production of power and by application of “artificial” radiation to medical and other uses. After a hiatus of decades in the United States (but not in the rest of the world) nuclear fission power plant construction may experience a revival, under the economic pressure of fossil fuel price increases a...

Mid-infrared nonlinear absorption in As2S3 chalcogenide glass

We report mid-infrared (MIR) nonlinear absorption in As2S3 glasses which results from two-photon excitation of valence electron to the Urbach extension followed by strong linear absorption of excited states. The measured MIR nonlinear absorption can be 3 to 4 orders of magnitude stronger than the two-photon absorption in the near-infrared for similar laser intensities and does not result from c...

Investigation of gamma radiation induced changes in local structure of borosilicate glass by TDPAC and EXAFS

Gamma radiation induced changes in local structure around the probe atom (Hafnium) were investigated in sodium barium borosilicate (NBS) glass, used for immobilization of high level liquid waste generated from the reprocessing plant at Trombay, Mumbai. The (NBS) glass was doped with 181Hf as a probe for time differential perturbed angular correlation (TDPAC) spectroscopy studies, while for stud...
